Short Synopsis:
A contemplative odyssey across our planet, looking at the simple and extraordinary ways that dogs influence our daily lives.
Former child soldiers in Uganda. The local pub in a Scottish town. A dog walker on the streets of Istanbul. A kaleidoscope of unconventional portraits from fascinating locations.
People need dogs, and perhaps they need us, but what do humans do to deserve the unconditional love they provide?
Long Synopsis:
‘We Don’t Deserve Dogs’ is a contemplative odyssey across our planet, looking at the simple and extraordinary ways that dogs influence our daily lives. Stories of hope, loss, redemption and love play out across parks, mountain ranges, apartments and city streets across the globe.
A street dog in Santiago, Chile, known by many names and loved by all, teaches us about the power of community. In Uganda, former child soldiers work with street dogs; the bond they form helping to heal their trauma.
On a mountaintop in Transylvania, Romania, a family clings to their traditions, believing themselves to be members of the last generation of true Romanian shepherds.
In Italy, dogs are trained to sniff out truffles. Highly prized, they can find thousands of dollars a day through a mysterious, often closely guarded, process.
The confronting issue of the dog meat trade is explored through the eyes of a husband and wife running a small meat stand in Hanoi, Vietnam, where dog meat is seen as no different to other kinds of meat popularly consumed by Western diners. In Nepal, on the traditional celebration day of ‘Kukur Tihar’, the residents of Kathmandu pay tribute to street dogs by showering them with gifts and garlands, placing a tika on their forehead and offering them prayer.
In Pakistan, a Muslim woman defies convention by having a pet dog, when her religion forbids it. She must balance the rules of her faith with the spirit of benevolence. A dog walker on the streets of Istanbul moves with his pack in a city overrun with cats. In Lima, Peru, young women are foregoing having children, showering love on their dogs instead.
On cold and wet nights in Scotland, evenings are spent at the pub, where everybody and their dog is welcome. The dogs are part of the unique social fabric, their names often better remembered than their owner's.
A kaleidoscope of unconventional portraits from fascinating locations, ‘We Don’t Deserve Dogs’ explores differences in culture, whilst celebrating our shared humanity. The film ultimately asks the question: people need dogs, and perhaps they need us, but what do humans do to deserve the unconditional love they provide?
