PowerPoint presentations, lectures, and textbook readings all have their benefits when it comes to educating students. However, the constant lectures and slideshows can become repetitive and dull, which can actually prevent students from thoroughly learning the material. So why not create some variety in the classroom by screening a powerful film that will surely grab the students' attention. Movies can serve as a helpful tool in educating students, especially if it is accompanied by follow-up questionnaires related to the film. Here are 5 reasons why movies are beneficial to your classroom: 1) Go beyond the words in a textbook A movie can go beyond the textbook and help students better understand a particular event or experience in history in a film. For instance, our film "The Power of the Powerless" portrays the struggles of Czechoslovakians during the nation's communist rule in the mid to late 1900's. Not only will students obtain thorough information, they will better understand the lifestyles and cultures the people had to go through during this era.
4) Educates students on a personal level
A powerful movie can help students develop their character, values, and personality in addition to educating them. Movies like "Rich Hill", a film about the daily struggles off three teenagers living in a small, poverty-stricken town, can relate to certain students which can improve their moral values and character. 5) Keep students engaged There will be times when students, and even teachers, come into class in a grouchy mood. During these times, a movie is an excellent way to provide some fun and relaxation to release some of that built-up stress. Professors can even choose to give out a worksheet during the movie, a quiz after the movie, and other forms of work that keep the students engaged. These are only a few of many reasons why movies can serve a useful tool for any classroom environment. So why not try something different besides the usual lecture and PowerPoint slide?
